It is hard to see but the rockers are pretty much an idea at this point.

I have a very hard time understanding how any modern car can have rust like that so soon

The only thing that rusts out this bad anymore is pickup trucks and I don’t understand why. I don’t care what brand, I’ve seen them all come through work looking like Swiss cheese.

The nature of how truck bodies are constructed allows for salty snow to be thrown up and caught by the lips of the fenders and such.

I’m not sure if this is more an indication of the vehicle construction or an indication of its usage.

You’re supposed to put on fender flares at this point to hide the rust...

I’ve always wondered why so many trucks have zero fender lining. Seems like their original design (work/dirt/mud) would need it more than any other vehicle. And aesthetically to hide those metal rod/buttresses that always looks so cheap.

You don’t understand how rust could develop after 13 or 14 years?

They sell well without the liner. It’s a cost cutting feature.

On a Chrysler vehicle, I guess I’m expecting too much...

I just find it ironic. If I spend $50k on any vehicle, that’s just unacceptable. I know on the HD trucks, the liners don’t work because they can interfere with the tires under heavy loads. But srsly.

They are basically media blasted with sand and salt all winter.

I’ll leave a note on their windshield.

Hey that’s McMike’s schtick.

Well salt, rocks and dirt get kicked up and destroy the paint and expose the metal and there you go. Rust.

And this picture’s a few years old at this point.
Some more cars from the era:
This one’s 10 years old
Lots of examples of cars rusting out after a decade.

In 4 years working around cars, I’ve seen 2 maybe 3, 3rd gen Ram’s without that rust.
One was because the owner told me he never drove it in the winter and cleaned the rear wells like once a month.

Please show me any vehicle from the north east that doesn’t have rust after a decade and a half.

My buddy in Boston has AMG Mercs and Audis that are outside parked and daily drives from that era (mid 2k) that do not have those issues.

Assuming he probably washes them, but have you looked underneath them at the parts not made from aluminum?
![]() 03/16/2018 at 12:56 |

Yes, they are fine. Both cars are good. I don’t know where your level of expectations are, but any car that rusts with regular care (at least semi regular cleaning and washing) after 10-15 years is a piece of shit.

but any car that rusts with regular care (at least semi regular cleaning and washing)
You’re assuming regular care. The last time I washed any of my vehicles was 4 years ago, for some of my vehicles it’s 7+ years, it’s just not high on my list of things to do. Most cars are not likely to get regular washes, especially after a decade.
